The Bunker kept them safe as much as anything. But it also felt like a prison some times. They weren't allowed topside because of the chaos that was going on. Castiel felt it was best if everyone stayed inside when not on a mission….not that everyone listened. When Alex and Claire first started ... seeing each other. They often snuck out to town for some alone time. Though, their relationship had been rocky, heated arguments which lead to breakups, then hookups with loud angry make up sex. Right now, they were in the off stage. Apparently Claire didn't like it that he came to her rescue when a vampire was about to make a meal out of her.
They had a blow out fight.
And angry make up sex hasn't happened yet.
It also didn't help that Alex was a Styne with a very aggressive and overprotective personality. His temper had gotten the group into trouble more often than not. But then, it's also gotten them out of trouble. Alex didn't believe much in diplomacy, everything could be handled with violence or a gun. Magic was a last resort.
But, in the end…they were all family. Alex, Claire, Jesse, Krissy, Castiel. As much as they fought sometimes, they all rallied around each other and never left each other behind. Currently, Alex as in the main room reading up on some lore. Not really his thing, but he was bored and Claire wasn't talking to him.
…which, depending on the season, wasn't anything new.
--
Claire slipped into the bunker, hoping that the alarm wasn’t on, and that no one was around to catch her having ever left. She held her breath as she closed the door behind her, oh so gently with a quiet click. Her eyes flicked upward as she waited for the alarm to announce her presence, and… nothing.
She exhaled loudly, nodding at the door before tugging her coat off as she slipped down the stairs, stepping gingerly, knowing the spots to step without a noisy creak. She glanced over her shoulder, seeing him, and froze. Why was he sitting there? He should be busy mooning over her or something, anything away from her.
This time, she hadn’t even told anyone why they had broken up. By now, everyone just rolled their eyes while Castiel gestured with frustration at them.
“Alexander,” Claire spoke in what she hoped was her best icy tones.
--
"Why were you out, Claire?"
Alex asked, without missing a beat. Even going as far as ignoring her icy tones with him.
"You shouldn't go out alone." he didn't care that she didn't tell him, he cared that she was so reckless with her life. "If nobody would have gone with you. I would have gone with you!" raising his voice at her as he nearly slams the book down as he stands up to her. Taking a deep breath, he closes his eyes for a moment and takes deep breaths. She wasn't the enemy. There was no need to raise his voice to her. They were… family. Even if he had anger issues. Narrowing his eyes at her.
"You always say it's your life, and you choose how to live it. Fine. Learn how to live it." saying as he stared at her for a long time before turning on his heel and walking off. "You know where to find me." telling her as he gave a hand wave in frustration. Once back into his room, he closes the door as he feels the two hearts in his body pulsing the blood through his veins. Kicking his adrenaline into over drive. How could she not see that he was worried about her?! That he CARED for her. That he LOVED her and would be absolutely shattered if something happened to her.
Pulling the punching bag out, he sets it up and starts punching at it. Needing to work off the steam that had built up. Each punch landing soundly, there used to be a time that Claire would stand behind the bag to hold it while he punched away at it. Of course, he only went half strength then. Tonight, he was punching the bag hard enough that little cracks were starting to form from each impact of his fist.
He was going to have to go find a new bag, soon.
--
Claire crossed her arms as she looked at him, a look of annoyance dancing over her features as he started in on her already. She already had Castiel fussing over her half of the time, she didn’t need Alex doing the same. She wanted him to understand that and be her partner, not another parent; but apparently he didn’t get it.
“I know how to take care of myself,” she snapped back at him, “you taught me how, remember?” She tilted her head, “I’m not some little girl anymore, Alex.” She paused, her jaw dropped as she watched him walk away from her just like that. She spluttered as she was there, standing alone. They didn’t usually fight this long over such a… trivial thing.
Okay, so it was pretty big at the time.
The room was already empty without him there, he always manage to take over a room without even trying. She stood there, her arms crossed as she tried to outwait him, he would come back. Right? Right? Her shoulders shook as she tried to count off the minutes, losing track; then they sagged as she hung her head.
“Shit.”
She was going to have to apologize this time, dammit.
She hated being the one to apologize. She set her jaw for a second before giving in and starting toward the hall that would lead to his room. When she found herself outside of his door, she thought about knocking, but instead, she pushed her way in. Instead of speaking, she closed the door behind her and waited, watching him.
--
Alex doesn't stop when she comes in, even though he makes eye contact with her, then pulls away to look at the bag again. His fists hitting the leather, but this time. The force wasn't behind them. Looks like the bag would be saved for another day. Stopping fully, he stands there for a moment as his fingers trail over the bag, looking for the words he needed to tell her. The real feelings he had for her. It was something they danced around a lot. Neither one of them said how they felt, and it often lead to them lashing out against each other.
"I'm just trying to look out for you." he finally says as he doesn't even look at her, afraid that if he did. The anger that he had would just … fall away. He wanted to be angry with her, she needed to see how upset this made him. But when he looks into her blue eyes, there's some sort of calming effect, even when he lets his humanity slip away, she soothes the savage beast in him. The Winchesters took care of most of his family awhile ago.
If it wasn't for Donna and Jody, he probably would have been a savage beast. It wasn't until he met Claire that… that… he found his humanity.
"If you go out again, take someone with you, me, Krissy..or even Jesse. Just… please?" asking as he looks over at her. Alex was the field leader when they were out, and in some ways, he was the leader inside the bunker when Castiel wasn't around.
I don't know what I would do without you…. is what he wanted to say. But the words never made it out.
Why was it so hard to admit this?
--
Claire watched him, letting their eyes meet – something inside surged hopefully, then trailed off when he looked away. He was pretty pissed this time and she didn’t blame him for it. Last time they had argued about the fact that she was spending too much time with Jesse in the kitchen. The time before that was… Hell, even she couldn’t remember that one. She sighed as she leaned back against the door with crossed arms, waiting for him to finish. It didn’t take him long, and when he slowed down, she pushed herself off the door.
“I know,” she exhaled slowly, “but you forget that you taught me things.” She attempted a smile, wishing that he would look at her so she would know that things were okay between them again.
Then there it was, his eyes connected with hers, and she couldn’t help but feel a mixture of relief and amusement. “You’d actually let me ask Jesse?” She shook her head, “I think he’s still scared of you after you nearly threw him across the room last time.” A grin danced on her lips before they faded, she tilted her head at him.
“Why is it such a big deal, Alex? I usually stick to the shadows, and with all this,” she tapped her head, “it’s let me be a bit more… smart.” And reckless, but she wouldn’t admit that – not to him. He had been right, she was always rushing headlong into danger before checking twice.
--
"I.." he trailed off, crossing his arms when she came closer. "Because it's not safe out there, Claire. Not like it used to be." sighing when he finally lets everything go, he takes a few steps, closing the distance between them. Taking her hand, he places it over his beating hearts. Letting her feel how they both work in tandem together. There was nothing else for him to say, she meant more to him than he'd probably admit. Pressing his lips together, he reaches up with a large hand and places it across her cheek.
Inhaling deeply through his nose, he fills his nostrils with her scent. Claire was special. "I don't want anybody going out alone anymore. Not since Donnie." looking down between them, he couldn't look at her when talking about their fallen friend. It was also a reason for their tension. Nobody talked about what happened, keeping it all bottled up between all of them. "He would have been there if I… if I would have gone with him." Alex placed everything on his chest, the weight of the world on his shoulders. Pulling his hands away from her, he steps away and turns his back. She didn't need to see the conflict on his features. She needed to see him as the strong leader that he was. Having to make the hard decisions, having to make the unpopular ones.
Chewing on his inner cheek, he takes a deep breath.
"That's why." saying confidently. It was a good reason, but not the whole reason.
--
“It’s only going to get more dangerous, they don’t know I have the grace though. Not yet,” she looked up at him, her lips parted as she readied herself to argue her point of view some more, then they closed as he walked to her. God, he had such power over her and he didn’t know it, not at all. Her eyes flicked up to him, a curious look in them as she waited for him to continue, but he didn’t. She laid her hand on his chest, feeling and trying to resist the urge to fold into him. Didn’t he understand that he was her safe place?
Her head tilted into his hand, her eyes closing for a moment, taking that moment to escape before he spoke again. She looked up at him, a frown skittering over her face when he mentioned Donnie. “How were you supposed to know, Alex?” She exhaled, she felt like it was her fault too, it had been a stolen moment between them when Alex should have been out there with him. A slow shake of her head as she felt him pull away from her completely.
“Alex,” she started again, she wanted to ask him not to leave, to stay. But she wouldn’t, she didn’t like begging.
But instead, she stepped up behind him, fitting her body against his back as she laid her head on him. “How were we supposed to know?” Her voice was softer, a tremble, as she closed her eyes in an attempt to forget that day. Finally, she shook her head as he took a breath, breaking the spell.
“Fine, I will tell you when I need to stretch my legs.” She shifted back a bit, studying his back, “but you can’t tell me not to go.”
--
Feeling her body press against his back, he closes his eyes. Placing his hands over hers. Letting the moment roll between them. "Deal. But, I still don't want you going out alone. Tell me, and I'll go with you." he whispers softly. Donnie's death was on his hands, even if nobody allowed him to take it. Taking deep breaths, he finally exhales loudly as if giving into her. Turning around in her arms, he gazes down at her. His hand pushing locks of blonde hair out of her face. Didn't she understand? She had power over him. Ever since the day they first met… she had him completely.
There wasn't anything he wasn't willing to do for her. If she asked him to go to the ends of the Earth. He would. Didn't she see that? Alex was fiercely loyal and protective of her. She saw past the bravado and anger, she didn't step away when he felt his humanity slip. Instead, she stepped towards him. Didn't she realize that without her, he would be nothing? Alex was silent, having nothing else to say. Then again, he didn't need to talk with her. It was almost like they understood each other.
"You understand that I'm just… trying to keep you safe, right?" asking, his voice soft and easy. Without the edge of the gruff behind it. Just them. Along as he could hold her in his arms, the world could go to hell…and he wouldn't care. "Just take me with you next time. It's all I ask."
--
Claire didn’t bother to continue the subject with Donnie, both of them had their own struggles and wouldn’t let the other help them; she understood that much. When he turned in her arms, she smiled tentatively, moving her arms up to settle on his shoulders – her hands locking together at the back of his head.
“Much better,” her voice was soft, “I hate it when we fight.” She tilted her head up at him so she could look into his eyes. She let the silence roll out between them, taking refuge in the fact that they were together; the connection was solidified again.
Her lips twisted, she gave him a slow nod before moving onto her toes to capture his lips in a kiss.
--
At this moment, Alex didn't have it in him to argue with her. Instead, he resigns into her as they kiss. She knew exactly how to break him down. To make him let go of his anger. Is this what it meant to be in love? Breaking the kiss after a moment, he gazes into her eyes. Just studying her for a long time. It was one of his things he liked to do. Especially in the mornings before she woke up, he'd lay next to her and just watch her sleep.
Because, while she slept? She was at peace. Even with the world outside crumbling… she was at peace next to him. Alex didn't understand what this was between them, what power she held over him, and him over her. Whatever it was, he didn't want to let it go, or let her go, ever. Tonight wasn't going to be about sex to keep each other company, or whatever excuse they came up with. No, tonight was something… else, something he didn't know what it was. But he knew, that it was something he didn't want to let go of.
They had a blow out fight.
And angry make up sex hasn't happened yet.
